The Proper Goal Setting Process
Most people want to get in better “shape”. The issue with that is, what is shape?? For example, if a middle aged person wanted to get in shape and a college aged soccer player wanted to get in shape, there is a huge discrepancy to what shape is. The two training plans better look different or someone is going to be getting a lot more or less than they bargained for.
Shape is too vague! You need to be specific, measureable and realistic. For the middle aged person, they may want to regain hip and shoulder mobility, gain general strength and finish a full workout without stopping, in the next 3 months. The soccer player may want to address previous injury concerns, start to train cardiovascular shape for their upcoming team fitness test and improve their overall movement ability in the next month. Those are specific, they can all be measured, and they are realistic. It’s not a one size fits all approach.

Move isn't just the name....
There’s a disturbing trend in our culture and it’s the lack of movement. Look around and you’ll see it or maybe you won’t? Go to the airport and you’ll see a conveyor belt that will actually move you around the airport so you won’t have to even walk! Have you gone to pick up a prescription lately? I’m guessing you used the drive thru so you didn’t even have to get out of your car and walk inside. Don’t get me wrong these modern conveniences are nice and we’ve all used them. But do we depend on them? Have we gotten so lazy that we’d rather wait eight cars deep in the fast food line than walk in and probably be served immediately?? Isn’t that why we’re there in the first place??
The most recent rage is the overwhelming popularity of texting. We all do it! Did you know there is actually something called, “Text Neck?” How alarming is that? The shoulders are hunched over and basically locked while the cervical
spine is flexed downward and focused in on the screen with your fingers firing away. It’s an overuse injury to
the neck and shoulder region. This one is of concern on several levels. Not only is there a lack of motion in these areas but the dependency to text is hurting our communication and relationship skills. Young people don’t know how to interact in social settings because they don’t do it anymore. When you text, emotion is taken out of the equation and lots of valuable information gets lost in translation.
Life is constantly moving! We need to start moving in all the ways the body is designed to move. Imagine how many more calories you could burn over the course of a week or month if you didn’t hop on the elevator for 3 flights of stairs at work??
Let’s change our dependency on these vicious patterns of convenience. Let’s put down the cell phone and talk to one another at the dinner table. Let’s start “Trending” by MoVing.
